blog-nov-28I turn to my collection of quotes from the big names that I consider most successful in business when I need a motivational boost. For instance, thoughts from Steve Jobs and Sheryl Sandberg are usually enough. Recently though, hollywood actor Bill Murray has joined the ranks of my collection and I think after reading this, you will see why.

I compiled four main points that I think every Real Estate agent and entrepreneur could benefit from to maximize their success and improve their performance.

1. Create your own system

When I learned that the only way anyone can get a hold of Bill Murray is a 1 – 800 number that serves as his agent and just about everything else, I was intrigued. Apparently, if you are lucky enough to get Bill’s digits, a pre-recorded voicemail will prompt you to leave a message and Bill decides if he want to call you back. In fact, that is how rookie director, Ted Melfi snagged Bill to sign on for, St. Vincent, which is in theatres now.

Bill is notorious for his keen sense of adventure, his under the radar lifestyle and for popping up at random places. He seems to value simplicity and freedom, two things that do not necessarily coincide with the life of an entertainer or an entrepreneur for that matter. That being said, he has managed to stay relevant within the framework for his business and life that he created. I suggest you as a REALTOR®, do the same.

  • Simplify your life by creating a formula that works for you based on your values
  • Businesses also do this. We have a rule at Redman where we only work on projects that aligns with our mission. If not, back to the drawing board we go
  • If your still not convinced, just remember that often times, it’s the ones that steer away from the pact that have the most success

2. The law of scarcity

When the phone started ringing too many times, I had to take it back to what I can handle. I take my chances on a job or a person as opposed to a situation. I don’t like to have a situation placed over my head – Bill Murray

There is some brilliant entrepreneurial advice in Bill’s words here. Bill knows that not every role he is offered is right for him and he doesn’t want to feel pressure about committing to something that he can’t fully stand behind.

REALTOR® Takeaway:

  • Not every job is for you and you can pick your clients. Remember that next time you feel like a prospect is wasting your time
  • When you become too available (we can liken this to business and personal life), you’re time seems less valuable so set healthy boundaries with clients . As they say:

what is plentiful is often unappreciated and what is rare and scarce is considered valuable

3. Relax

REALTOR® Takaway:

  • It’s no secret that REALTORS® have a certain entrepreneurial spirit usually reserved for Type A personalities and understandably so. There is a lot of weight placed on the win. But what happens when you lose a listing or flat out fail?
  • If you are operating from a more ‘in the moment’ mentality, you are less likely to feel the burn of failure for long and move on to your next challenge.

4. Focus on the bigger picture

When I feel like I’m stuck, I do something — not like I’m Mother Teresa or anything, but there’s someone that’s forgotten about in your life, all the time. Someone that could use an “Attaboy” or a “How you doin’ out there.” It’s that sort of scene, that remembering that we die alone. We’re born alone. We do need each other. It’s lonely to really effectively live your life, and anyone you can get help from or give help to, that’s part of your obligation. – Bill Murray

REALTOR® Takeaway: 

  • This one is pretty straight forward. If you have a deal that has stalled or is falling apart, go do something nice for someone because at the end of day, it’s you and me kid (you know what I mean).
