How do you feel about yourself?

This is a significant question to ask!

The perception one has of themselves and their surroundings can also be thought of as confidence. Confidence you exude to the world, or lack of, even the positive versus negative outlook that you project, this “feeling” you have about your self and the world around you can ultimately, determine your allotment in life.

Let’s face it; most people prefer to work with an upbeat and positive Real Estate Agent. So I guess the question is, if you’re not showcasing yourself in the most positive light possible, then how do you make changes in order to reflect this persona?

To start, consider what you wear when you meet potential or current clients. Does this mean that you have to dress to the max everyday, wearing expensive suits? Not necessarily… That being said, you should never dress like a slob either. Your job is to dress neat, clean and professional, based on your cliental and the occasion. You may dress slightly up or down in formality. If you decide to specialize in Luxury Real Estate, I recommend dressing for the part wearing quality suits and appropriate attire, while as an Acreage specialist, you may be better suited for a nice country style shirt and wranglers.

Real Estate professionals who truly succeed in dressing the part are the ones who make a consistent and memorable statement in terms of their personal style. If you lack the ability to determine what is best for you, style wise, sometimes a professional stylist can guide you in the right direction.

The next step is to own your career. This means to become a “sponge” of knowledge in the Real Estate business. The more knowledgeable or educated you are about the industry the more expertise you can project to your clients; the more people will view you as an expert!

Everybody wants to deal with people that can expand their knowledge and experience. As a sales person your job is to fulfill this need.

To further enhance your expertise, consider:

  1. Finding a Mentor or many mentors – the more you can listen and learn and the more likely you will be able to mimic this knowledge and in turn mimic this success!
  2. Learn Your Target Market Inside and Out – Read market reports, view active homes that become available in the area, subscribe to the community newsletters or anything else that can enhance your awareness about the area or demographic that you wish to specialize in. A point to remember is that truly successful people start off by specializing in a niche market and by branching off once they have built extra man-power (teams). It is virtually impossible to be everything to everyone.
  3. Keep up on the latest technology and tools they will help build and improve your career. Make sure that your writing, your website and any other way that you promote and communicate with your potential clients mirrors the confidence that you project in person.

When meeting you clients remember, stand tall, smile and project your voice. Be courteous and polite and when showing a home think of yourself as the host or hostess ideally, arriving 10 minutes early so that you have time to go in and open all doors and make sure that all lights are turned on.

Over the course of my life I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to meet thousands of REALTORS®‚ and am happy to report that most have been positive and kind. That being said though, some realtors forget that everyone is a potential client, or a potential referral. We all have to remember that “show time” should not only be set aside for “known clients” but rather anytime you meet or talk to someone. You don’t need to spout out your infomercial every time you meet someone, but given the opportunity, be ready to express your confidence and knowledge! Don’t be afraid to project your inner expert voice and show all your potential clients that you are a confident and well educated Real Estate agent, whom would be happy to lend your stellar selling skills to them and their friends.
